A competitive force is an important part for the external audit because it help us as an organization to identify the rival firms and to determine their strenght, weaknesses, capabilities, opportunities, threats, objectives, and strategies.

By doing the correct process of each element on this aspect will boost us to collect and evaluate the information on competitors that will be essential for succesful strategy formulation. 

 

Bellow we are going to show the different elements that assist us to stablish which companies are our most relevant competitors, and recognize our weaknesses so we can improve. 

KEY QUESTIONS ABOUT COMPETITORS

 

1.What are the major competitors` strenghts?

The industry in which our company is involved in a range wrap covering the health sector, in which more precisely may call the fitness industry, which is taking heavy weight throughout the world, "Gyms and health centers with high-end technology and equipment make a strong trend in Latin America, but especially in Colombia "[1]. magazine mentions the viewer, but this means that this sector to be one who is using a good development in the country today, there are competition and a grate number of consumer, this is a strength since being an emerging market there are plenty of consumers. 

This sector as was mentioned has a large line of competitors, "However, according to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA, for its acronym in English), the entity that brings together globally in the country operate 1,500 gyms, of the 160,000 that exist globally. This is 0.93 percent of the world total ". This factor is represented as a fortress because as we know there is a wide range of users for our organization[2]. 

With this figure, the country is the third largest market in Latin America population. This aspect and growth of gyms are uncovering expressions of interest from international labels which provide racing you Colombians and foreigners established. Therefore we can say that our competitor’s margin involves health fitness centers including gyms, as was mentioned gyms covering high percentage users of this industry.

2. What are the major competitors weakness ?

The weaknesses of that to be an emerging industry is that being as a sector with a wide range of users, is a sector with ample competition, this is a weakness since many other organizations promoting our own product. "The industry 'Fitness' in Colombia has presented in recent years, accelerated relative to other Latin American growth. This is because the country has recognized the strengths of business and employers have an interest in the care and welfare of people, he told Radio Santa Fe Orlando Alvarez, Precor Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean[3]. Other weaknesses may be competitors: competitors offer new services that we are not able to provide which would indicate loss of customers, Changing the culture, possible change in the mentality of people leading to the loss of interest in the care, also demographic problems as well when we are talking about the location. We also consider that the sectors that involve the whole issue of health and physical care to represent as much coverage, for this we are not assured when a we talk about have a great impact in the industry, therefore another weakness could be being an emerging market.

3. What are the major competitors objectives and strategies?

Competitors in this industry are adapting new trends and new ways to raise new innovative strategies and objectives in this industry, these new features are summarized in four steps, the first are the characteristics of the product / service, what drives the purchase decision a particular product or service are the characteristics. Consumers compare products and choose the one that you think works well and have quality; secondly the reliability, which means the customer is always well-functioning, and reliable. Third customization and ease is not a causal success that is taking the personal training service and all custom services related to personal care and cosmetic; fourth the price, adjust much the company costs and optimize the entire operation, as margins begin to shrink[4].

4. How will the major competitors most likely respond to current economic, social, cultural, demographic, environmental, political, governmental, legal, technological, and competitive trends affecting our industry?

Due to the great result that has brought the Colombian economy lately on issues such as inflation, is to say, the purchasing power of people has been decreasing drastically. So that, selling a new, innovative service could be a little bit difficult, thanks that people would be interest in something profitable. Social and cultural trends are for people who want to improve their health of lifestyle. People who love to be active, be healthy and fit. Those who are minded to invest in their health for the future. Demographically, will be focused on any social stratum who has purchasing power to afford it. The location must be only people who live in Bogota. Nowadays people has been changing their minds, due to the marketing and publishing of having a healthy lifestyle. New products have been launched such as organic, fat free, no carbs, gluten free, etc, products that encourage a better environment.

 

5. How vulnerable are the major competitors to our alternative Company strategies?

Our strategy of selling is to offer a personalized and unique service, which to this day, there is no exact competition. The only industry that approaches us would be every single gym which offers a nutritional and training consultancy plus a service of machinery of training.

 

6. How vulnerable are our alternative strategies to successful counterattack by our major competitors?

As I said earlier, competitiveness handling Healthy Style is directly focused on providing its professionalism and transparency service, hiring a full staff of professional experience in addition to medically be updated. This is a major weakness that gyms do not work because of lower costs and pay technical people and not specialized in the subject.

 

7. How are our services positioned relative to major competitors?

we are positioned as service of low price but with a high quality performance, we are making our service in order to make accessible to the consumers without forgetting the quality, and our competitive advantage is that we offer a complete personal service and a comfortable one which the consumer can have the training in commodity of home.

 

8. to what extent are new firms entering and old firms leaving this industry?

Is possible to infer that with the increasing of consumers on this indutry the competitors are increasing as well in the last years there has been an higher offer of this service and including the informal trainers our market is shared by variaty of companies and people offering this service. 

 

9. What key factors have resulted in our present competitive position in this industry?

We consider that the experience in the market and in the industry is one of the most relevant factors that make our competitors to be in a high position. In consequence their performance, have led them to have a financial position too.

 

10. How have the sales and profit rankings of major competitors in the industry changed over recent years? Why

have these rankings changed that way?

The information of Hard Body Gym and Studia BodyTech whom we consider ones of the most relative competitors is not provided on the web because of security terms. And that is why is not possible to determine why these two factors changed over time.

 

11. What is the nature of supplier and distributos relationship in this industry?

The nature of the relationships of supplier and distributors in our industry is purely commercial, for us, suppliers give us technology (i.e. laboratories that help us analyze our consumers’ health, our personal trainers); on the other side, our relationship with distributors is that they would recommend us (i.e. in a gym that does not offers a personalized counseling in sports and nutrition) and that would give us more clients, they would be ‘distributing’ clients to us.

 

12. To what extend could substitute products or services be a threar to competitors in this industry? 

Apps like Gym Pact, where people is being paid for having a healthy lifestyle and for eating healthy, are starting to represent a huge threat to gyms and to services like us, because our potential clients are starting to feel more motivated because they are receiving something in exchange of having healthier habits.

 

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS: PORTER´S FIVE - FORCES MODEL 

 

1.Rivalry among competing firms

 

Rivalry among health and sport industry in Colombia is increasing nowadays there are many locals where the people can get this kind of services including informal trainers with expertise offering a variety of options, people is spending more in this industry, but the issue in this industry is the high costs and the commodity for the consumers because most of them rather prefer this service in the commodity of their houses, and the other key factor here is that if the customer goes to a gym and wants a personal trainer they have to be able to afford the amount of money that it costs, so what makes us different from our competitors is that we offer a full service with nutritional diet following the specifications of the consumer and plus the nutritional service we offer the personal trainer in the commodity of home, that will allow the consumer avoid the stress of transport in this city.   

 

2.Potential entry of new competitors:

The greatest interest for healthy lifestyle, rapid urbanization and fashion, among other things, promote the business of gyms in the country. "More foreign ask gyms track to enter the country, franchises are coming from increased demand and growth prospects in coming years"[1].

"In Latin America Fitness business generates more than 5.5 billion dollars in revenue, of which more than 220 million generated in Colombia, making it an interesting and emerging market for foreign companies," emphasizes CNN about a report in 2012 by the IHRSA (International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association)[2].

Colombia demonstrates that this sector represents a high growth and address a wide range of inputs not only from domestic industries but foreign franchises that are trying to get into this industry.

3. Potential development of substitute products 

 

Firms are in close competition with producers of substitute products in other industries. For us, one of the substitute product is the Be Smart method, which consists in using EMS technology. What Be Smart use is a vest electrodes, adjusting perfectly to the body with the electrodes of arms, legs and buttocks. Another is the Shaper Thermal Sauna Belt, Fat burning, by using this product consumer will not have the necessity to make any physical effort and could possibly achieve similar results. Also the Vibroaction belt Shaper Vibration, costumer as well will not have the necessity to make any physical effort, by using this product consumer will not spend time. Because of the innovation in technology and the use of the facility that people have to get connect to internet, new applications are emerging. One of the most famous application is the GYM Pact, where the user makes a pact on how many days he/she will exercise, they set the Challenges of how much they pay if they do not complete the session, also they can records the visit to the gym via GPS. Or they have the possibility of time running, cycling or walking with RunKeeper.

4. Bargaining power of suppliers 

 

Any organization needs to produce raw materials and this necessarily creates buyer-seller relationship between the market and suppliers. The distribution of power within these relationships varies, but if you are with a major supplier then you can use this influence to dictate prices and availability. You need to evaluate the balance of power within the home market as part of the Porter model.

 

 

5. Bargaining power of consumers 

 

As our product is not essential and somehow, standard, the bargaining power of our consumers is higher, it is going to be really easy for them to find a substitute product. The following circumstances show how our consumers gain bargaining power:

  1. Our consumers can inexpensively switch to our competition, whether is downloading an app or just going to either their closest gym or to their college gym.

  2. Our clients are particularly important to us as sellers, so as they are seeing this in us, for them is going to be easier to bargain.

  3. At this moment, we are not struggling with our demand falling.

  4. Nowadays, and seeing as our customers are highly connected to the internet, they are more informed about us and about our competition’s products, prices and costs; which gives to our consumers a high bargaining power.

Knowing our customers, they are not going to be very discrete when hiring our service.
